Clearview Elementary closing on Friday due to COVID-19 concerns

The Troup County School System announced Thursday night that it was closing Clearview Elementary School on Friday due to COVID-19 concerns among staff members.

Superintendent Brian Shumate said that he was concerned that there wasn’t enough staff to effectively run the school on Friday. There are 2 positive cases at the school among adults, plus 12 direct contact from adults resulting in those employees quarantining. Clearview Elementary clarified in a Facebook post that there are two adult cases, plus 11 other adults in direct contact that are quarantining.

The school also said there are also three students in quarantine due to direct contact, but no positive COVID-19 positive cases among students.

None of the 13 adults will be allowed back in the school on Monday due to COVID-19 protocols.

The school system will monitor cases over the weekend and will make a determination on Sunday by 3 p.m. about school at Clearview on Monday.

The school will undergo a deep cleaning over the weekend, according to Assistant Superintendent Chip Medders.

“We knew this day might come, and here we are,” Shumate said.

The school system was notifying parents through its One Call system on Thursday night.
