Callaway gears up for region schedule

Daily News

The Callaway Cavaliers were off last week as they prepared for the start of their region schedule.

Callaway (4-0), which beat Thomas County Central 16-14 on Oct. 9, will carry an unbeaten record into its Region 5-AA opener at Haralson County next week.

Haralson County, meanwhile, was also off last week, and it will carry a 5-0 record into the Callaway game.

The game will be the start of a challenging region schedule for Callaway, which is looking for its second straight region title.

All five of the teams in the region have winning records, and four of them have been ranked in the top 10 of at least one poll during the season.

While Haralson County and Callaway are unbeaten, Temple and Heard County are 4-2, and Bremen is 3-2.

After the Haralson County game, Callaway returns home on Oct. 30 to play Bremen.

Callaway continues its region schedule with a game at Temple on Nov. 13, and it finishes its region schedule, and the regular season, with a home game against rival Heard County on Nov. 20.

Callaway remained unbeaten with a dramatic 16-14 win over Thomas County Central.

The Cavaliers trailed 14-9 late, and they scored the game-winning touchdown with seven seconds left on a 10-yard pass from Demetrius Coleman to Jalin Shephard.

“It was very special memory for the kids, for our coaching staff, for our fans,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said on his weekly radio show. “When you can go down to a school like Thomas County Central with their tradition, a big school, that’s got a really good football team and come away with a win was very special, and how we did it made it even better.”

The Cavaliers got the ball for the final time on their own 42-yard line with 48 seconds left, and Coleman led them down the field and delivered the winning touchdown pass to Shephard to cap that memorable drive.

“To win the game with seven seconds left on the clock is really special,” Wiggins said. “I know that I’ll always remember that game, and I know the kids will, too.”

When Callaway returned to practice on Monday following the emotional road win in Thomasville, it began preparing for the showdown with Haralson County.

“That’s a big game down the road,” Wiggins said. “Coach (Scott) Peavey has done a great job at Haralson County. They’re ranked fourth in the state, they’re undefeated. They’ve got a really good team. They’re physical. So it’s going to be a big challenge in two weeks when we go up to Tallapoosa to play Haralson County.”
