On Friday around 11 a.m., members of Troup County High School’s Alumni Association held an outdoor cookout in celebration of Teacher Appreciation week. On the menu was chicken, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw and dessert.

Shane Frailey, president of the Alumni Association, said the cookout was their way of giving back to the school.

“We got here at four o’clock,” Frailey said. “We put 150 half chickens on the grill, and now they’re ready to serve.”

Frailey explained that the alumni association raises money for the school.

In the past seven years, the association has raised over $100,000.

“We love supporting our teachers. We think they’re the backbone of our community, and we really appreciate everything they do for us,” he said. “We just love giving back to our alma mater.”

Coach Connor McNamee, who teaches biology, environmental science, and algebra I, said he appreciated the cookout.

“It’s nice to be able to not have to worry about packing my lunch,” he said.

Three school employees at the event received gift certificates to take their families to Longhorn Steakhouse. They were Carla Thornton, coach, PE and health teacher; Karla Jones, records secretary; and Tanner Glisson, head football and baseball coach and PE teacher.
