OUR VIEW: Pay study a smart move by county
The Troup County Commission recently approved an update to a pay study from five or six years ago, with the purpose of seeing how employee pay compares to surrounding counties.
County Manager Eric Mosley said the previous pay study gave the county a lot of good information and led to updated policies, allowing for more qualified candidates.
Things have also changed a lot since the pay study was initially completed, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, employers of all shapes and sizes are having trouble finding qualified employees, and county governments aren’t immune.
Of course, finding qualified employees also means ensuring that people are being paid good, fair wages that to compare well to other, similar jobs.
It’s essentially allowing a third party to compare and then give the county feedback, which we think is a good thing.
At a time where they are plenty of jobs, and apparently not as many qualified employees to fill them, then every step to hire and pay fair wages is a good thing.
As citizens, we all certainly want the county (and our other government entities) filled with intelligent, hard-working employers who have the best interest of our community as a whole in mind.
The cost to the county is also relatively low at $32,500, well worth the information that will likely be gained. It’s expected to be completed this year.
These types of studies should be done every few years, and we’re glad the county is taking the initiative to do so.
